The Business behind the Numbers: Financial Analysis in Action

This workshop equips participants with the knowledge and critical skills to examine financial statements and derive meaningful insights for decision-making. Participants will learn key analytical tools such as Du Pont model, ratio analysis, trend evaluation, and comparative techniques to assess organizational performance and financial health. These essential skills set can also be applied in making credit and investment decisions.

Foundation & Structure: Introduction to the purpose and structure of financial reports.

Deep Dive into Statements: Using a “Think Business “mindset to do a detailed exploration of the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement.

Analytical Techniques:

    • Ratio Analysis: Liquidity, solvency, activity, and profitability ratios. Du Pont Model.
    • Trend Evaluation: Horizontal analysis to identify trends and growth patterns over time to uncover information beyond numbers.
    • Comparative Techniques: Vertical analysis (common-size statements) to compare items as a % of a base figure.
    • Cash Flow sustainability : Analysis of the working capital and free cash flow position to evaluate it liquidity sustainability.

Practical Application: Case studies to provide practical exposure to both sound analytical practices and decision-making.

Koh Siew Min
Koh Siew Min

Siew Min leads a team in providing financial consultancy and training to banks, MNCs and management institutes in the Asia-Pacific region. In addition to possessing a degree in Accountancy from the National University of Singapore, she is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA, USA).

Siew Min was in the adjunct faculty with the Nanyang Technological University, teaching Commercial Bank Management, Corporate Finance, Investment Analysis and Portfolio Management. She was also in the adjunct faculty with the NUS Business School, teaching the module on Financial Statement Analysis in the NUS MBA Program. She also teaches treasury risk management, corporate risk management and the use of derivatives in various Institutes of Higher Learning.

Drawing from her broad exposure in various management roles in the banking sector, Siew Min regularly delivers training to share her expertise with fellow participants. She is bilingual in English and Chinese and also conducts programs in Mandarin for China participants in a variety of banking subjects. She brings to her training programs a unique blend of academia and practical industry experience in banking and finance gleaned from years of research, teaching and business management in the sector.
