AI & Automation for Accountants : Bridging Accounting and Technology

This workshop will help accountants understand automation and AI from their own lens and accounting from a technology lens , putting both perspectives to work on real tasks. We start with what AI and automation is and where it genuinely helps versus where it falls short in an accounting context. We will subsequently move through practical automation use cases and build the data skills that make automation reliable using familiar examples such as reconciliations and consolidations. The workshop finishes with automating repetitive actions using AI-assisted coding and VBA. Short concept blocks are paired with guided hands-on exercises throughout.

By the end of the workshop, you will learn how to :

  • Explain the basics of automation and AI from an accountant’s perspective, and recognise the limitations and challenges of applying AI in accounting.
  • Identify and apply practical AI and automation use cases in everyday accounting work.
  • Prepare and operate on data — cleansing, lookups, grouping, reconciliation and consolidation — so automation is reliable.
  • Automate repetitive tasks using AI-assisted coding (“vibe coding”) and Excel macros / VBA.
  • Build a personal next-steps plan for adopting automation safely and responsibly.

Foundations: automation and AI for accountants

  • Automation and AI through the accountant’s lens
  • Accounting through a technology lens; levels of automation

Operations and use cases  [Hands-on]

  • Core operations: merge / lookup and group / summarise
  • Importing & consolidating; unstructured PDF → table [Hands-on]
  • Data cleansing
  • Use case: reconciliation — bank and intercompany [Hands-on]
  • Use case: consolidation and management report with variances [Hands-on]

Automating actions: vibe coding & VBA  [Hands-on]

  • Introduction to macros / VBA; recording a macro and its limits
  • Reading code; “vibe coding” with AI — design, prompt, insert, test & debug
  • Building reusable tools; debugging common errors
  • Hands-on: automate a repetitive task end to end [Hands-on]
  • Process orchestration (intro): triggers, schedules, across apps

Wrap-up and next steps for you

  • Where to start: think big, start small; re-engineer before automating
  • Doing it safely — data privacy, security and responsible adoption
  • Your next steps and Q&A
