By the end of this session, participants should be able to plan and perform an effective audit of impairment assessments under IAS 36, with particular emphasis on intangible assets and cash-generating units (CGUs).
Using an IT company as case study, participants will learn how to:
- evaluate management’s process for identifying internal and external impairment indicators;
- determine whether impairment should be tested at individual asset level or at CGU level;
- assess the appropriateness of the CGU and the components included in its carrying amount;
- audit management’s determination of recoverable amount, including VIU and FVLCD;
- evaluate the method, significant assumptions and data used by management in accordance with ISA 540 (Revised);
- challenge forecasts, contradictory evidence and possible management bias; and
- evaluate sensitivity analysis, impairment headroom, disclosures and the overall audit conclusion.
